Grandpa Harley and MMMManifestations Theory Extended Discussion

betweengenesisfrogs:

[Content warning, as with my Jade post, for discussion of sexual assault, CSA, perceived suicide, and trauma, discussed slightly more explicitly than in the previous post, as well as abuse, alcoholism, and neglect in the context of other characters.]

So red-zora asked about my interpretation of Grandpa Harley from my Jade post, how my understanding of him as a character differs from mmmmalo’s interpretation according to his Manifestations Theory and how this all connects to Lord English. Very belatedly (sorry!), I’m finally posting my response!

I’ve wrestled a lot with how to approach the topic, since it concerns very intense emotional trauma that could be painful and triggering for many people, and I definitely don’t want to come off in any way hostile to mmmmalo (henceforth Malo), who by every indication is a really awesome, good dude. On the other hand, I’m sure plenty of people would be interested in my reasons for thinking the way I do, and this is a really good opportunity to clarify my thoughts. So read on if you’re interested. Let’s say I’m down to see how the conversation goes, and I’ll reserve the right to call it off if we need to.

First off, I want to make this clear: I’m not interested in excusing or ignoring any problematic actions by Grandpa Harley or any other Homestuck character. I mean, come on. This should be obvious from the fact that I spent my Jade post tearing him a new one, calling him a bad person, a bad parent, and someone who had a huge negative influence on Jade’s life. I’m more than willing to think he’s terrible.

I just disagree with some other Homestuck analysts about *why* he’s a bad parent. In figuring out Jade’s story, I’ve tried to draw on canon evidence as much as possible. I’ve tried to base my understanding of Homestuck on that evidence, and it’s that desire to be accurate to the work, rather than any desire to excuse anybody, that’s given me the interpretation I do. Hopefully that makes sense.

Here’s my thesis, then, based on a close reading of Homestuck:

Grandpa Harley’s characterization in Homestuck is based around absence and neglect, rather than sexual abuse. While it’s impossible to prove a negative, I find it very hard to make the case that he’s being depicted as a sexual predator. In viewing him as one, especially in “this is what’s happening in the story” terms, I feel like we lose track of what’s going on in his story, both in Hiveswap and in Homestuck itself.

Now, I should note that Malo’s Manifestations Theory doesn’t really deal with the literal level. As I understand it, it relies on symbolism and motif, mostly Freudian and Jungian, to draw new and interesting meanings out of Homestuck. That puts it in a different category than a literal claim about Grandpa – a reading based on symbolism is much harder to prove or disprove. At the same time, I still find symbols of ABSENCE, DEATH, and FANTASY to be much more central motifs for his character, essential if he is to be understood.

Below, I’ll talk about why, first on the literal/factual level and then on the symbolic level, and then finally get into my own feelings about Manifestation Theory and how I’d interpret Lord English under such a framework. Bear with me, this is going to be a loooong one.

I don’t have a ton to add here other than to say that I love this post. I myself have been struggling with wanting to address malo’s take on Grandpa-as-sexual-aggressor while also keeping perspective on my general enjoyment of malo’s work and Manifestation Theory in general.

I’m pretty much feeling like you put my jumbled, messy thoughts in order here. This is pretty much my answer to any inquiries about Grandpa-as-sexual-assailant, too.

I’m likely to have more to say about this down the line (hopefully soon I can voice my thoughts on Malo’s own response to this post, and man I am excited that we’re communicating about this stuff as a community!), but for now just…bravo. I’m so glad you took the time to write this out.

yo im rereadin homestuck after i dropped it a third of the way thru, absolutely confused after a blazing fast two day binge (i did not sleep)… anyway, wheres all the good meta blogs. who has the analyses u find find fascinating, controversial, or just solid a++ interpretations of this frikkin webcomic blob. i need discussion. i will also accept discourse. keep up the life-sustaining work buddyo

I’m glad you’ve joined us! 😉 Alright so, I should mention that me mentioning other people isn’t the same as me saying I agree with all their opinions. I just want to avoid confusion, because I think a big part of what makes the conversation around Homestuck so rich rn is the variety of in-depth opinions and perspectives.

https://www.youtube.com/user/thetrulyalex/videos Tex Talks is a must watch. He’s incredibly good at what he does, and changed how I see Aspects fundamentally. He’s also the person who got me to start considering Pages as Active and Knights as Passive.

@betweengenesisfrogs is an amazing writer, and helped me learn a lot about the comic’s Gnostic themes. I also like @arrghus ‘s posts on Aspects and @homestuckexamination / @wakraya ‘s general writing, especially the idea of Castes being influenced by their associated True Sign’s Aspect. And @sam-keeper ‘s articles on Homestuck remain some of the most influential writing on me personally, even years after they were written.

I also enjoy a lot of @mmmmalo , @dahniwitchoflight and @bladekindeyewear s writing. That’s probably a decent crop to get started with? The last two in particular have been around for years, and are some of the best known Homestuck “theorizers”, as it were.

Hope this helps!

I was replaying Hiveswap, and using Byers on everything (as one does), and when I used him on the wizard snowglobe in Joey’s room, it said “Byers would make a good wizard’s familiar. But he’s already yours”. or something to that effect. I was just seeing stuff about witches and familiars, and thought it was interesting, even if just a coincidence. Could Joey be a Witch? I know her whole thing is healing, but could that be a roleplay thing? I’m better at posing questions than answering them.

I’m honestly not sure. Joey could be a Life player in some deep-ass Light roleplay, but her Light roleplay hasn’t seemed INHERENTLY unhealthy like most have? Her being pissed about her dad’s neglect seems p reasonable.

If A. Claire is in fact a Jane, then Joey could well be roleplaying in imitation of her. Heck, “Claire” even sort of qualifies as Light-related, so the Light influence could even be there too? But I’m genuinely not sure!

I’m still reading her as a Maid of Life currently, but the possibility that she’s an Heir or Witch is in my thoughts now. I suppose we’ll see.

for the archetypes and class thing, what about the other 6? like I’m the Explorer but on your lists I don’t know where that would fit XD

I’m not sure I understand the question, sorry. What other 6?

If you mean 6 classes, each Archetype corresponds to two Classes.
You can think of Classes as different “versions” of the Archetype, with the same rough powersets that are simply deployed differently. Or at least, that’s how I think of it.

Does that help?

i LOVE your articles about homestuck’s mythos. i love your way of thinking about things, your grasp of the narrative and your depth of thought! is there a place you go to talk about these things with people like you? i want to hang out there lol

1) Aw jeez, thanks!

2) I’m mostly around on the Discord channel dedicated to my Youtube channel (Patron or Patron-invitee only), and in the Hiveswap reddit’s Discord where I’m a mod.

Hi! I saw your last video about hiveswap and then look the aspectbound table. And then had the subit idea of, if earthbound/mother is heavily inspired by the Beatles in musical and spiritual levels, this influence would have touch Homestuck and Hiveswap too? (And in some curiosities like all starts with a John kid, there was an important apple, an asshole killed him, Jade looks like John but is a girl who looks like Yoko, etc. Ah, was a group of four who can play instruments. Um.)

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard that Earthbound was heavily inspired by the Beatles spiritually. It has references to it, though, yes. Homestuck does too, I think–or at the very least, Hiveswap does. “Hey Jude” is an achievement, after all.

you implied dirk would eventually remember the game over timeline along with terezi and davepeta, I’d like to know why you think he specifically would

Oh, no. All I was alluding to was that Mind and Heart powers in general both seem to be linked to alt-universe memories. I kind of already believe this about Dirk, since I suspect he correctly subconsciously intuited Jane’s other name, Anna.

Since Dirk has Heart powers, I just mean he has the idea of Heart to add to any potential fraymotif combination. Considering what Dave and Terezi were able to do together, literally who knows what the kids could accomplish by working together as they learn to use their powers to their fullest.

anon: I don’t do analysis writing on individual classpects, not because I don’t want to or don’t think it’s worth doing (there’s lots of cool peeps doing it on tumblr now!) but because I could do it literally forever.

Writing or producing content mostly related to Homestuck is basically a full-time job for me, so I try to stay focused on making stuff as many people can enjoy as possible. When I do talk about this stuff, I’d like it to be focused on particular characters, and ideally on Youtube.

That way,

A) People who aren’t already in love with Classpects might have a chance in hell of being interested, assuming I do my job well enough and
B) I can hopefully paint a much more evocative and interesting idea of what the Title might be like.

Until then, I think what I’ll do is mention a character I read as at least related
to said Hero Title, if I can think of one.

At least two characters I’ve considered covering in video form can be read as Pages of Heart, I think: Kirby (serves himself the bodies and identities of his enemies; wears hats) and Steven Universe (though I also think he might be a Knight? I’m not sure. I’d need to rewatch SU at this point.)

@appreciationcat Thanks! I don’t know if anyone “should” use classpects any particular way, especially since I’m not even sure we fully understand the system, but I’m glad if what I’m up to is helping anyone understand classpects better.

@geekness101 See 1. As it happens, though, we have one such character right in the comic. Jake English may not be a Witch, but he does roleplay as one for a good chunk of his narrative. Keep an eye out for my writing on that as soon as I can possibly produce it.
