“Roxy starts off INCREDIBLY passive aggressive and manipulates the Jakestakes quite a bit for her personal benefit, even as she pretends not to” I don’t necessarily disagree but I am curious as to what you’re referring to. Do you have a post on this subject you could link me to?

I actually don’t, I’ve tackled writing one before but it just didn’t come together in my head. But its together now so here we go, I’m making it now JUST FOR YOU.

image

I really love Roxy and this isn’t me trying to shit on her, to be clear. What I’m describing is something Roxy addresses and feels regretful about herself, as she describes to Jake.

But honestly becoming aware of how rough Dirk gets it from everyone made watching the most common fandom takes on him pretty much insufferable to me, so I do want to use this as an opportunity to knock some more dents into the terrible “Dirk was an aloof, cold manipulator who lacked Heart”  fandom metanarrative.

Because frankly the shit he gets from Roxy puts into perspective that in canon,  Dirk is a deeply loving and self-sacrificing boy with the patience of a goddamn saint and the self-loathing of a particularly repressed catholic, so let’s run through the greatest hits.

image
image

Let’s start at the Trickster arc, where Dirk plainly expresses his awareness of the behavior Roxy was describing above.

By this point in the narrative, Roxy’s feelings for Dirk are an open secret that goes unspoken since Dirk and Jake are dating during the 6 months of the session, but Trickster Mode dredges it all back up instantly.

Now let’s go back to the start.

image
image

Right in the pesterlog where Roxy asks Dirk to think about what it’d be like if they had kids together, she quickly alternates between being dramatically despondent (gotta wonder why this doesn’t get mentioned the way it does when Eridan does it to Feferi, btw) and outright aggressively disappointed in Dirk because of his sexuality.

This is Roxy being really forcefully clear that Dirk is gay, and that his gayness is a huge fucking drag for her. And we really have to point out that Roxy is the only actual friend Dirk has who he’s even out to at this point in the story!
Jane is completely clueless, and the only other person who knows is Hal, who is the manifest opposite of healthy emotional support.

image
image

When we see Dirk and Jake talk at 13, Jake alternates between reacting sharply negatively when Dirk so much as mentions the word gay and avoiding the subject entirely when Dirk tries to talk about gayness.

So like, sure Dirk’s emotional constipation has a lot to do with trying to live up to ideals of masculinity, but then again it’s not that Dirk doesn’t try to talk to anyone about his honest feelings? It’s that everywhere he could turn he’s met with some combination of disapproval, defensiveness, ignorance and/or disinterest.

It’s a pretty shit environment to be a gay guy in, honestly! And Roxy’s in the best position to understand and empathize with what Dirk’s going through, which means I’m inclined to hold her a bit more responsible than Jane and Jake.

Speaking of those two, this is also the period when Roxy A) Wants to stop everyone from playing Sburb at all, and B) starts playing matchmaker for Jane and Jake. And her feelings for Dirk put a bit of an edge on her actions, because sure, I’m sure a real part of her just wants Jane to have a fair shot…

image

But then again, if Jane and Jake hook up, that means Dirk’s got nobody but her, doesn’t it? Even when Dirk is denying any possible future for them outside of Sburb, Roxy questions the fact, still holding out that Dirk will get ‘ungay for a while’, as she puts it to Calliope.

image
image

Meanwhile, she passes the time by alternating between flirtlarping with Hal, a cybernetic 13 year old Dirk (Dirk feels deeply conflicted about having created) and switching back to flirting at him when he asks her to stop.

image

She even outright complains that Dirk isn’t more like the AR, pressuring him to act more like he used to before he started really becoming aware of his sexuality, or at least before he stopped wanting to own it honestly. In other words, Dirk is being pressured to feign interest in Roxy, with his own AI doppleganger being held over his head as a “superior” verison of himself.

image
image

Hal is fully aware Roxy is doing this, btw, and he uses it to further manipulate and guilt-trip Dirk as a way to lash out due to his own issues. And we know that on some level, it works, because when he talks to Jane on the quest crypts he comes clean about the fact that he actually DID feel guilty that he couldn’t just be into girls and give Roxy what she wanted.

All of this plays into every aspect of how Dirk relates to himself and the people around him–He feels guilty for not wanting Roxy, he feels guilty for viewing Jane as competition, he feels guilty for making Hal and subjecting him to his torturous existence, he feels guilty seeing Hal act out a warped, juvenile, toxic version of his own affections for Jake..

And he’s confused into conflating Hal’s agency with his own and taking responsibility for all of this as indicative of his own personal failures without ever considering the faults of anybody else except Hal, who he perceives less as his own person and more as a particularly damning extension of himself.

It is not a wonder that Dirk feels innately fucked up and toxic by the end of Homestuck!

image

But it IS kind of infuriating that so much of the fandom takes his description of himself at face value, because most of what he feels guilty for isn’t actually his fault. Like, christ, Dirk confesses he felt guilty about Roxy not long after Trickster Roxy sexually assaults him. That’s what this scene is! It is a non-consensual act of sexually charged contact! This is literally on the level of Crockertier Jane delivering her sex slavery speech to Jake.

image

But nobody really talks about it that way here, because Dirk’s whole thing is taking everything stoically on the chin and holding nobody responsible for anything bad that happens but himself. This panel is basically the epitome of that.

He thinks about punching Roxy to defend himself, given an opportunity to be a “man of action” for like, maybe literally the first time in this session and solve a problem head on, but he doesn’t. Because ultimately, he can’t bring himself to consciously hurt Roxy, and his desperate need to be a Good Person simply outweighs his desire to be left alone.

image

Anyway it all works out in the end, and Roxy correctly deduces she ended up messing with Dirk’s head, so I’m glad they presumably worked through all that stuff on Earth C. I just wanted to try to impress what a rough ride this was for Dirk with regards to how he was treated over his sexuality specifically, since I think it’s gone so under-discussed in the fandom.

Now Dirk is happy with his boyfriend Jake and his best friends Roxy, Jane and Callie, and he’s got a cool brother who loves him, and he has everything he deserves and more which means all is right in the world.

Roxy is in a way better, healthier, happier place too, with anywhere between one loving snake girlfriend and two girlfriends+maybe an eventual boyfriend if she and John ever decide to do the dating thing.

The sky’s the limit and she’s got all the romantic attention she could want, which is what she deserves because she’s a gem and a treasure who does her best by her friends even if she fucks up sometimes.

Homestuck is good. The end.

“I noticed something. Going by your understanding of classes, the betas…”

Maybe it’s my somewhat sleep deprived state talking, but the 413 statement you said makes no sense to me? In total there are 8 human kids each group of four has three of them in one alignment and one in the other. Am I following or did I completely miss something important here?

413 is a recurring important arc number, particularly for the betas. If you don’t remember that, I can see how the statement would confuse you, but that’s all I was commenting on.

I noticed something. Going by your understanding of classes, the betas had three passive classes and one active while the alphas had the opposite (three actives and one passive). Do you think that influenced their sessions in some way?

Sure. For starters, it would mean both groups are made up of 4 kids with 1  alignment, and three of the other. 413. It also means both sessions were out of balance, only balancing out when brought together.

And each session was subtly designed against the party’s strengths. As Dirk said, he might’ve thrived in a hectic session that required a man of action, like the one the Betas got.

I see this as partly indicative of the fact that Active classes are more inclined to be forceful agents on the world around them, more innately self-assured and directive, and so more likely to take agency directly as a result.

John and Dave spend pretty much their whole games taking direction from either trolls, Rose, or Jade–and Rose spends HER entire game being manipulated by Scratch and the Horrorterrors. None of them are innately attuned to acting as lone agents.

On the flipside, Passive classes are more attentive and reactive to the world around them–including the people in it. Jane, Jake and Dirk all struggle to get out of the loops in their own heads and communicate with each other, and this is a huge part of why the Alpha’s dead session is such a nightmare for them.

That might also be why the dark horse leader of the session turned out to be the kid who broke the mold:

Jade is the only Beta kid who comes up with her own plan as opposed to taking direction from other sources for most of her adventure, and Roxy is singled out for her selflessness and ability to help her friends and prioritize the team over her own personal feelings.

Note that both girls grow into that role once they enter the session, though–early on, Jade is pretty passive as a result of her Prospit dreaming and Vriska-induced narcolepsy. Roxy starts off INCREDIBLY passive aggressive and manipulates the Jakestakes quite a bit for her personal benefit, even as she pretends not to.

Joey Claire is SO good, you guys. Joey’s a stellar depiction of growing up in the 90’s, and she’s taken a very special and personal place in my heart. I really hope this video helps draw people in to her story.

This is a look at Joey’s arc in Act 1, using only one guess at her potential Hero Title: Maid of Light. Our lack of canon confirmation of Joey’s actual Aspect or Class combined with my personal thoughts on Roleplay mean that this is really just a guess at her title, even moreso than the Xefros or Dammek videos.

I can think of one other potential Classpect for Joey based on the evidence we’ve seen, but this one contextualizes her struggles in Act 1 best in my opinion, so I wanted to share it here. Whenever new information comes out,  I’ll probably release a follow-up video, especially if it turns out this interpretation doesn’t tell the full story.

Todays’ question is: Did Joey’s story make you feel like you understand what it might’ve been like to grow up as a nerdy girl in the 90’s a little better? Did it mean something to you?

Attention SU fandom,

Former storyboarder and artist on the Crewniverse Jesse Zuke (Formerly known as Lauren Zuke when with the Crew) is currently facing severe financial troubles due to them not being able to work as an animator anymore due to serious mental ailments. They are currently facing eviction from the apartment at the risk of being homeless and without a job. Luckily, their gofundme page has already raised enough money to pay off one month. However, almost the entire fandom still is not aware of Zuke’s current situation. Let’s give them all the support and spread the awareness!

Here is their gofundme page:

https://www.gofundme.com/housingforjesse

Here is their thank you video after reaching the gofundme goal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWWmleWiaic

I could say a lot of things right now but in the end, this is just really fucking important.

The fandom should be ashamed of what they did to Zuke, regardless of your personal feelings towards their opinions and work they did not deserve what happened to them.

So maybe give back a little/share if you can, because we owe a lot of what Lapis, Peridot and just the show in general are today to them.

A talented human being who has gone through so much

Please help them as much as you can in their time of need

They deserve it and I wish them the best in their life and future

also totally forgot, wanted to make a note on something Vriska says about Echidna

VRISKA: Really, who knows what her real purposes are? They’re pro8a8ly totally unfathoma8le.
VRISKA: Echidna is kind of a 8ig Deal Denizen. One of the real heavy hitters, like that other guy… the really strong one with the ridiculous name.
VRISKA: She might even 8e the 8iggest deal. She’s the mother of all denizens. I mean, not in a literal sense. Like, I really dou8t she physically spawned them all.

in greek myth Echidna is literally the mother of all monsters, but that bolded line there is referencing Yaldbaoth, a gnostic concept, not a greek myth

and i think this is interesting that this is the way that Hussie is deciding to mix Gnostic and Greek myths, he’s making Echidna the literal mother in both myths

he’s basically equating her with Sophia the aeon of wisdom from gnosticism that spawned Yaldabaoth and was responsible for his creation by emanating without her partner aeon (reproducing on her own without her spouse essentially) which is where we get our word Philosopher, meaning Lover of Wisdom, Philos Love and Sophia Wisdom

and thats really cool! i just wanted to say that lol that Homestuck’s Echidna can be thought of as more of a mix between the Greek Echidna and the Gnostic Sophia! adds a new angle onto how to view her 😀 and makes sense as she has always been a denizen in Homestuck that has all this wisdom to give and greater knowledge of all the sessions beyond and likely to be the essential key denizen when stuff goes down

Makes me start to question my thought that Calliope would get Abraxas as the other more truly powerful gnostic concept, if Hussie is adding a gnostic connection to Echidna, who is already the space player denizen then it’s a high candidate for a version of Calliope to have her as a denizen as well!

Caliborn as one half that was stunted in growth has Yaldabaoth the stunted god thrown out of heaven Lucifer analogue

The cherub that is the true merger of Calliope and Caliborn has the Abraxas, as the ultimate god merger of everything

and a Calliope would have Echidna, as the super strong mother space denizen with connections to Yaldabaoth directly made with the connection to Sophia as his mother

and I keep saying a Calliope because what I think is most likely is that Alt!Calliope is most connected to Homestuck Echidna which is better understood as Echidna/Sophia, powerful all knowing warrior mother goddess most in opposition to Yaldabaoth with the Sophia connections, while our Callie gets Abraxas, the true real one, what is meant to happen and the actual gnostic denizen who transcends both Echidna/Sophia and Yaldabaoth!

I love pretty much all of this-the link between Echidna and Sophia has never felt more explicit, especially with Alt-Calliope as a manifestation of the “Holy Ghost”.

though I disagree with our Calliope having Abraxas as opposed to Echidna. Part of this is that I think Jake and Karkat fill the role of Abraxas partly through their relationships to both cherubs.

But to me, Alpha Calliope seems like the truest version of Sophia we get in the story, and that makes all the difference. She’s the Sophia who tries to “know the unknowable” (Cherubs playing Sburb is an explicit taboo) and creates the Yaldabaoth of Homestuck: Lord English.

Isn’t Abraxas sometimes portrayed as a union of opposites, including both effectiveness and ineffectiveness? Couldn’t he therefore be both the strongest and weakest of Denizens, depending upon context?

dahniwitchoflight:

not just sometimes, that’s literally what he is and because he stands for all opposites, he isn’t stuck between effectiveness and ineffectivess, since ineffectiveness in it’s nature never manifests, it is literally *ineffective*,

It is things not happening, versus things happening, so something that doesnt happen has no power against the things that do happen, letting unbridled effectiveness unfold wherever it pleases. They are unique opposites that by nature do not cancel each other out.

This is what Abraxas is all about and why he is a god, the ultimate god guy person thing. he need only imagine something for it to become reality because as the culmination of all opposites, usually all opposites cancel each other out, so his power is nothing except effectiveness, since that’s the only thing that manifests in the face of its opposite

but yes since he is literally everything in one being, he is the most truly powerful (yalda only believes he is the biggest bad aruund because he is either ignorant of Abraxas’s existence, or is directly malevolent against him, depending on the tale, but homestucks yalda seems to be the ignorant one)

but this means that as a denizen in nature he is whatever the player can need him to be, representing them perfectly like how Karkat described for himself, but the thing that makes me think that its Abraxas the most is Karkat saying how he’s the opposite of Yalda, and Yaldabaoth and Abraxas are opposed as the fake ultimate and the true ultimate creator, everything Yaldabaoth does is just a sham imitation of what Abraxas is

Abraxas creates all things from himself and permeates all of a reality of like while the facets of himself manifest as varying aeons of a perfect reality

Yalda tries to imitate this by creating our material realm in which he permeates throughout and this is gnosticism’s explanation for why our realm is dark and imperfect in nature, a cheap shitty imitation, think how like Homosuck is to Homestuck

So Karkat saying the denizen opposite of Yaldabaoth, when usually you would assume that was Echidna, but he’s clearly meaning someone else, makes me think he means Abraxas. Those three Echidna, Yaldabaoth and Abraxas are closely tied together symbolically in homestuck, especially when you see the Echidna/Sophia parallels, they are the 3 denizens directly relating to gnosticism and to eachother, so when soeone mentions one while describing another, i tend to them of them 3, so it’s perfect as well that as Yaldabaoth is represented as all powerful and for the strongest players, Abraxas would be represented seemingly first as the opposite, for the ‘weakest’ players, but in reality he is truly the Denizen of the actual strongest players, even if they themselves do not see it yet

Perfect for someone like Karkat and Jake

just think of it like them being “Strong in the real way” yknow?

Homestuck Examination – Classpect Analysis Masterpost

homestuckexamination:

Hello! I’m Homestuck Examination, and for a while now I have been doing Class and Aspect analysis stuff. With the advent of the Canon Aspect Quiz and some pretty interesting explanations of each Aspect, I decided to make a Class Quiz, which you can take following this link:

HSE Class Quiz

Ever since I made this Quiz, people have been asking me to go more in-depth about some of the Classpect Combinations, and until now I’ve been answering them separately- But then, given they just kept coming and repeated ones kept popping up in my Inbox I thought, what the hell? I may as well do every single one of them broadly and get it over with!

Below I’ll post links to analysis for each Class individually on its own, and a broad view over how each Class Pair would interact with each Aspect.

Creator Classes – Sylph / MaidAspect Analysis

Giver Classes – Knight / PageAspect Analysis

Visionary Classes – Seer / MageAspect Analysis

Innovator Classes – Heir / WitchAspect Analysis

Taker Classes – Rogue / ThiefAspect Analysis

Destroyer Classes – Bard / PrinceAspect Analysis

Master Classes – Muse / LordAspect Analysis

A foreword about this analysis, the pairings may not exactly match up your personal Headcanons, specially talking about the Knight/Page alignment and the Sylph/Maid and Heir/Witch pairings, but I do explain my reasoning in the analysis, and you should check this if you want a more in-depth analysis about the reasoning between these pairings and power ideas.

Furthermore, Classes sharing the same Verb are similar enough with their powers that they may be interchangeable- So what a Bard of Time can do, a Prince of Time likely can, and so on, so if you don’t exactly agree with my analysis, make sure to check the Passive/Active counterpart!

Hope my analysis helps you come to terms with your own Classpect, or think of fun interactions and things Players could do within a Session!

Kudos to @revolutionaryduelist for his amazing analysis of Homestuck as well as the little Class Cards, and to homestucking-girl for the base sprite I used for the Mage Class!

And if you want to see my original Post about the Class Quiz, you can find it over here!

sorry for wasting your time but i have an incredibly stupid question: even after the rapture and and the kids land on earth c. what do you think they did with their god tier outfits or terezi her flarp outfit? keep them somewhere?. because i have a stupid thought is that they wear em like actual pajamas.

i definitely dont think they burnt them on a pyre so they didn’t go anywhere. they’re probably just in their closets or sylladexes and whatnot
