The big thing with homestuck IMO is that we’re all stupid, and this is stupid, and it’s all for fun. Not knowing something is fine most of us don’t, if you’re willing to learn someone will be willing to help (more for that anon earlier than you, but I’m sure you agree)

Right like? I’m honestly not that smart or special I’m just some dude who decided to start making meta posts based off Homestuck *AND* wikipedia and dictionary definitions for the most part, literally anyone can do this shit given enough time

If I seem particularly insightful, it’s mostly just that my brain is literally broken to such an extent I can barely think about anything BUT Homestuck to an extent that was seriously hurting my professional and personal life until enough people decided they liked my rambling enough to pay me for it that I could seriously cut down on frivolous shit like “finding a full time job”, and “going outside”.

I’m in a healthier place with it now, dw. But I still just fucking like video games and anime and Homestuck a lot and find thinking and talking about that stuff a lot of fun, and I’m currently in a position to consider doing that literally one of my jobs.

I’m not better or smarter than anybody, I’m just trying to succeed by way of obsessive passion. And I’m not trying to succeed at providing The Truth about Homestuck, either! I’m frankly probably wrong about a lot of the stuff I say.

But I don’t think it matters because if I keep throwing ideas about Homestuck out there forever, some of them will probably eventually seem interesting to people, and even if not we might all have fun talking about it. I’m only really trying to start conversations and entertain you.

Tl;dr please don’t treat me like I’m smart or uniquely talented. It’s seriously just me reading wikipedia and having most of Homestuck imprinted into my memory, which makes it easy to look stuff up and talk about the big picture.

Also I’m mediocre at video editing and trying to get better I guess, which helps because it makes consuming Homestuck meta less of an exhausting chore.

Also, believe in yourselves. I guarantee you all of you can do things way more interesting and compelling than what I can come up with. Believe in the me who believes in you and all that.

i consider myself a bard of heart, but i find it to be a a puzzling combination. what sort of personality traits would a bard of heart exhibit? the only bard we really get a good look at is gamzee, acting selflessly for LE. the next best think would be dirk, the prince of heart. i’ve been trying to work out what this classpect would entail, and i’m curious to see what your take on it is

Mob from Mob Psycho 100.

I’d also kinda argue, given my view of Roleplay and Knights as Passive*, you could see some of Dirk’s behavior as indicative of what a Bard of Heart might look like.

That doesn’t mean Dirk is roleplaying a Bard or anything, it’s just that the inherent flexibility of the Classes tends to lead to weird overlaps and blurred lines. Basically, Dirk growing up is a Prince to his core, but he isn’t trying to be.

What Dirk wants to be is a Knight, like Dave. Hence, he makes versions and representatives for himself all over the place, having them either serve his purposes/desires [Sawtooth & Squarewave], or having them act in his stead to serve & protect his friends [Lil Seb & Brobot].

But those agents house something of Dirk’s destructive instincts, and tend to destroy/break stuff. So in a sense, Dirk can be seen as inviting destruction through Heart, because destruction is happening because of his being in a way he isn’t directly aware of, and didn’t necessarily intend.

The epitome of this is AR, who is a Prince of Heart roleplaying a Knight himself, who is willing to engage in a LOT more potentially destructive action while being able to delude himself into thinking he’s just being helpful/servicial.

AR giving Dirk’s head to Jake probably parses, somewhere in his mind, as serving Jake Dirk’s/his own Heart/Self on a silver platter. And since doing that involved getting Dirk to commit suicide, it was an act of Destruction of Heart/Self.

But basically everything AR does is a subset of Dirk’s own initial choice to create him, right? So when traced back to the root, Dirk’s eventual forced suicide can be interpreted as Dirk having invited the destruction of his own Heart/Self, through his Heart/Self as manifested by AR.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Dirk’s creation of the AR itself can be interpreted as an act of service in his own mind. Dirk didn’t actually think AR’s creation would be successful, and it’s Jake who egged him on, making it a point that he thought Dirk would succeed simply because he believed in him so much.

And Dirk, who is already in love with Jake by that point, definitely wouldn’t have wanted to fall short of his best buddy’s faith in him. So. There’s that.

The trick to getting me to answer asks is basically to ask me anything I can somehow twist into being about dirkjake. sorry lol

*(Worth mentioning that I think this view holds even if Knights actually are Active, since they’re presumably still less Active than Princes, and so roleplaying a Knight would render Dirk less Active than he would ordinarily be. This shit’s all relative.)

hey so i have a question for ya. im fairly confident im a maid of space, but theres certain aspects of my life that lead me to wonder if im a prince of time, and i just think im a space player because it thats what i give off (like how dirk acted like a mind player but was a prince of heart). is there any way to like, tell the difference? between whether im a space player or a prince of time?

I’d say just go with whichever one you like more/the one that makes you feel best and most inspired about yourself and your own potential. if you change your mind later thats ok too. it’s for fun, so have fun with it! 🙂

In your Gamzee part 1 video you mention that Lord English is a physical entity on Alternia that the Highbloods worship. But I thought LE didn’t actually manifest there, and only worked through his agents (Scratch/Handmaid/etc). Was LE actually there, or did I misunderstand what you meant there?

Nope, he’s literally already there. Here’s the breakdown of LE’s influences per universe, NOT counting cross-universe influence situations like Gamzee making the Jack Noir/Lil Cal dolls in John and Dave’s heads, because seriously we could be here all week.

Pre-Sburb :

Beta Earth | Setting of Hiveswap [B1]:
No Lord English. Lil Cal and the Batterwitch are both present. The Batterwitch MAY have started a small Mirthful Messiah cult, which might be operating in Joey’s hometown.

Alpha Earth [B2]:
No Lord English. Society is run into the ground and reduced to a nightmare waterworld dystopia by the Batterwitch, acting as a Witch on LE’s behalf. She employs a massive Mirthful Messiah cult that takes over the U.S. Government in this endeavor*.

Caliborn is present, but ignorant of his future as LE. AR acts for himself, not LE, but echoes many of Scratch’s traits and so evokes a weaker version of the controlling horror of LE. This is intentional, as AR’s cyber-omniscience is part of what makes LE/Scratch’s control so terrifyingly efficient.

*(Sorry 2 Guy Fieri and Juggalos, who get it rough from Homestuck, to put it mildly. Please remember that Homestuck is a work of fiction just poking fun at some random people, ok? Thanks. Also, to be fair, mind control is kind of a thing with the Batterwitch, so she might just be mindcontrolling them all during that whole thing.)

Beforus [A1]:
No Lord English. Presumably no Lil Cal? Kurloz Makara acts for Lord English. Meulin Leijon is mind controlled or manipulated by Kurloz into acting for Lord English.

It’s noted that while Beforus was matriarchal, most of its actual power of governance was held by Purplebloods and Violetbloods–male dominated castes that collectively embody different versions of LE’s patriarchal dominance.

The Purplebloodsin particular are probably Mirthful Messiah cultists, if Kurloz is anything to go by, but we don’t know for sure.

Alternia [A2]:

Doc Scratch acts for LE, manipulating trolls into being as cruel and vicious to each other as possible. At the end of the universe, Doc Scratch dies and his corpse hatches, giving birth to LE. LE can time travel, so having arrived at the end of the universe, he can now access any point in its timeline to consume or destroy whatever he chooses.

This was Scratch’s objective from the beginning, and had always already happened. LE takes custody of Damara, who becomes the Handmaid–
LE’s loyal Time Witch, acting as a feared Demoness who stokes hostility and chaos wherever she appears.

With the exception of directing Damara, Scratch and LE rarely seem to directly involve themselves in the affairs of Trollkind.  The three main groups of trolls they delegate governance to are:

The Empress, who he manipulates while keeping his and LE’s existence hidden.

The Violetbloods, who seem to be manipulated similarly.

The Purple Bloods, who worship Lord English and prophecize about the coming of his Vast Honk. Their intense commitment to this truth motivates their brutal subjugation of lowbloods.

This is not a simple belief, but a fact they are right to see coming. LE releases the Vast Honk as soon as he enters the universe, thus proving them right all along. Hence, the Vast Honk can be understood as “inviting destruction through Rage|Truth.”–the verbiage associated with Gamzee’s title, Bard of Rage.

This more direct presence/involvement is the direct reason why Alternia is so much worse than the other universes, and a big part of why the Beta Trolls are so much crueler to each other than the Kids are.

I didn’t plan for this, you gotta believe me. The Homestuck thoughts converged on me late in the night, beat me up and MADE me make you start watching what’s now at least a trilogy of videos on Gamzee Makara–often described as the worst character in Homestuck. I’m sorry.

…But is he? A combination of new insights from the fandom and lore details revealed through Hiveswap have left me wondering if, perhaps, this lousy purple clown may have hidden depths after all. I found the questions so exciting, I literally couldn’t resist the impulse to drop everything else I’m working on to share them with you. You’re welcome.

I wanna do something a little different, so I’m going to include a question of the day for each video from now on. Answer it, and you might have higher odds of eventually being featured in a comments response, whenever and however I bring those out for you guys.

This week’s question is simple:
What do you think the relationship between Lil Cal and Gamzee is like?

If you’d like some other perspectives on Gamzee to work off, here’s some of the works that inspired this one:

Why does each kid have their respective species of consorts? Curious, because it is notable that they are different from each other.

all i’ve ever really thought about them is that they’re different species of cute, colorful amphibians that seem like the kind of thing a kid would like. i don’t really think theres some deep symbolism behind them or anything as of right now–they’re just fun npcs in some vague need of rescuing.
