FAQ

What’s a Big Bang?

A Big Bang
is a fandom challenge where writers and artists collaborate to create
fanworks over a set period of time. You do not have to be at any
specific skill level to join!

Where do I reach you?

What can I make?

Writers:

Tier one (Birdgeoning talent): 2,000 words

Tier two (Step up): 5,000 words

Tier three (Over? But we just started!): 10,000 words

Tier four (Hope springs eternal): 15,000 words

Tier five (Accidental astronaut): 25,000 words

~
All works must be able to stand on their own! Sequels and such are fine
as long as they’re comprehensible without having to read up on previous
works.

~ In the spirit of adventure and fairness all summaries
will be anonymous, which is why works that have been posted elsewhere
are not eligible for this event!

~ Exceptions to this rule can be
made if you’ve written something that’s largely unfinished and unposted.
If you feel like your work falls in this category contact me and we’ll
work something out!

~ You can, however, post about what you’re writing! Snippets, teasers and such are wonderful. Don’t
spoil your work or point to what summary is yours to make sure you can
stay reasonably anonymous during claims. The reveal is part of the fun!

~ Post as many previews and teasers as you’d like but hold back on posting your finished piece(s).

How do claims work?

There will be more information on this as the date approaches but here’s a short rundown:

– Writers turn in their summaries and they’re posted anonymously

– Summaries are looked over by artists

– Artists send in their top picks to claim a work

– Every work is (hopefully) claimed

– Additional claims open once every work has been partnered with an artist

– Claims close and everyone gets paired up

What if I already have a partner?

That’s
fine! Sign up and write your partner’s name on the form and cross off
on if you’d like to be included in art claims or not.

Can I write more than one work?

Absolutely!
If you feel like you have the time and energy you’re welcome to make as
many works as you want. There is no upper limit as long as you’re still able to meet the deadlines.

I signed up for one tier but I want to downgrade/upgrade to another!

No
worries! Let me know on the check ins and I’ll write it down. If you’ve
been partnered with an artist please make sure to tell them too!
Communication is key. In events like these it’s important to keep in
touch!

Can I claim more than one writer?

Yes! Keep in mind what you’ll be able to do and make sure you can turn things in on time!

What is a pinch hitter?

Pinch
hitters are people who step in when someone drops out/goes MIA and make
magic happen. They often work with tight deadlines or step in last
minute. They’re a godsend for any stressed out mod or lonesome
participant.

Pinch hitter sign ups will be open during the entire
event! If you sign up you will be put on a list and contacted as needed.
There’s no obligation to pinch hit and you can drop out any time!

can. You can also check the #Answered tag to see if someone else asked

I saw a sad facebook post from the gay bookstore back in Ann Arbor where I used to live about how they hadn’t sold any books that day so I went on their online store and bought a couple, and while you don’t get #deals like elsewhere online, I’d love it if y’all would consider buying your next gay book from them instead of like, Amazon.

Common Language is a great bookstore and while I’ve only been there once, I follow it on Instagram and really want to see it succeed!

A little update:

At last count we had 211 online orders over the last couple of days. We generally have a handful of online orders PER MONTH. And many days our in store sales are 3-5 books. In other words, this deluge is significantly more than we sell in a month. We are literally brought to tears by this outpouring.

About 80% of them have already been fulfilled and are on their way to you.

The other 20% require special attention (out of print book, book temporarily out of stock, etc.) or we need to pull together books from various sources. Some of you will be getting emails from me!

Our staff is three people and one dog. And while the dog is, perhaps, the world’s sweetest dog, he’s not much help in this task. The lack of opposable thumbs is a big hindrance to many bookstore tasks.

Mind you, we are not complaining. Having a surge which overwhelms our current resources is a great problem to have. Heartfelt thanks.

As I take a short break from fulfilling orders I wanted to share a few thoughts.

This is transformative.

We will be able to pay some bills which will steady the ship for a longer voyage. In our wildest dreams this surge would continue, we’d hire more people to handle the load, and the world would have a thriving honest-to-god queer bookstore.

But even if it doesn’t continue at this truly astonishing rate, having a regular flow on online orders would give the store a level of security we haven’t seen in a long time.

All of you did this. You made it happen. And you can be a part of making that dream come true. In fact, you can be the most important part of making that dream come true. You can be an ambassador.

It was, after all, an ambassador who made this happen.

When a friend talks about getting a book, steer them to us. Our mission is to create a safe space for LGBT people, a resource for a community, a place of equality for women, a place where black lives truly matter, a place where your gender is what you say it is, not what anyone else says it is.

If this is your mission as well, join us.

It doesn’t matter if it’s reclaimed, it’s still A Slur. People need it tagged for various reasons, I need fucking butterflies tagged because otherwise I have panic attacks, like 99% of people don’t mind doing that, but as soon as someone says they need q/eer tagged (even though it makes much more sense and is much more widespread in both its use and its negative effects) people throw up in arms

Okay, hold up. This ask is conflating trigger tags/content warning tags with reclaiming slurs and using them as a personal label.

Triggers don’t have to be logical. If someone needs the word ‘queer’ to be tagged for because it gives them panic attacks/flashbacks/other trigger reactions – or even just because it’s an upsetting word to them – they are within their rights to ask for someone to tag it.

But ‘this word is upsetting/triggers me’ is a valid reason to ask for a tag all on its own. ‘Queer’ being Schrodinger’s Slur doesn’t ever have to come into the equation if you need it tagged for emotional/mental health reasons, and it doesn’t have to be remotely reasonable. Brains are weird and pick their hangups at seeming random sometimes.

Otoh, if you want ‘queer’ tagged or censored by someone else *because* you define it as a slur, you should probably be ready for a fight – especially if the person identifies as queer. because consider: you’re functionally telling them ‘that word is only for your oppressors to use against you. trying to take away their power to hurt you with this slur by taking it for yourself is not allowed because I – an unrelated third party – have not chosen to reclaim it myself or feel the word as a reclaimed label does not apply to me. As such, anyone whose experiences may be adjacent to mine should also not use this word in a positive way.’ It’s just invasive. And, if you’re not personally reclaiming ‘queer’, not really your business!

(On that note, I’m curious if you’d feel comfortable telling people who call themselves these other reclaimed or partially-reclaimed slurs that they can’t call themselves that/they need to tag for it/they need to censor the word in their posts because it’s a slur: Dyke. Slut. Whore. Bitch. Even Gay (which, incidentally, was the ubiquitous insult of my youth, treated as synonymous with ‘stupid’.) and this list is far from exhaustive.

I think the reason ppl are primarily going after queer as a reclaimed slur is because of a deliberate effort to ignore & erase the reclamation history of ‘queer’ – a reclamation that was so near-complete (in the US) that college classes were named ‘queer studies’ – so that a label with purposefully fuzzy edges and definition would pass out of common, unquestioned use, making it easier to determine who is ‘allowed’ to be LGBT+ and who isn’t. But that doesn’t mean everyone has to claim queer as an identity or that it hasn’t been used to hurt anyone. I just want people who accept ‘the q word is an unreclaimed slur and always has been’ narratives to think critically about where they got it from.)

The point is: identities are messy, and a lot of minority identities (and ppl in widely denigrated employments, like sex work, and/or nonmonogamous sexually active women and/or ppl misgendered as women in general, etc) have names that are or were slurs. Some people choose to reclaim and own those slurs, and telling them ‘it makes me uncomfortable so please censor your label’ is kinda shitty.

So if someone uses a word as a label that you cannot stand to see, even in the context of being reclaimed as a self-identifier/proud label, you should probably just block that person so you can’t see it anymore. You can also use blacklist functions and tumblr’s tag filtering features to help you avoid slurs being used as reclaimed labels. (And This is also where I remind people – including myself – to carefully consider what to censor with asterisks or slashes b/c doing so can put triggers past blacklist functions. and remember to tag if you do choose to censor certain words.)

Good post! Also, I will recommend that people who need to not ever wish to see a particular word use the desktop version of Tumblr with Xkit, which allows more extensive blacklisting than Tumblr’s own settings. (The only thing that won’t block is images with words in them; and content tagging is still good and I generally support it. But Xkit will save you from seeing posts with particular text in them.)

I’d just like to add to FoF’s very good answer: you can always ask someone to tag for the word queer. But that Does Not Mean that they have to. Trigger-warning for your own identity can be extremely taxing, and a person does NOT owe that emotional labour. Your mental health does not come before theirs, and I wish that was more acknowledged in these debates, and that it was more widely accepted that it’s not always as cut and dry as “if you don’t tag for triggers, you’re an asshole”. Part of me wonders how much that social rule of tumblr has been used to coerce queer people into treating their own identities like awful words even when they didn’t want to.

Good addition that’s very important! I meant to say this explicitly but forgot to.

I always wanted to ask someone who was a fan of both Homestuck and Undertale: how would each of the kids play Undertale? Who plays every path including the Geno run and who does only pacifist and then never plays again? (Also who kills Toriel on accident and then resets to save her because they feel bad?) I kinda want to ask about favorite characters of the characters, but that might be a little too esoteric.

dirk plays pacifist and neutral, gets partway through geno and becomes too upset to continue. stresses himself out thinking he should finish it, but can’t because it makes him feel too bad about himself. he would accidentally kill toriel but not reset because he would be committed to following his choices through, i think. favorite character… i think he would lowkey really like alphys. 

jake would do neutral to pacifist, definitely not geno. i could maybe see him resetting to save toriel if he thought of it. he would do a neutral route the first time and get some LV i think. not in the ruins because the toriel telling you not to guilt is real but later on, when things get more frustrating and you keep dying. his favorite character is undyne. OBVS undyne. but he would like all of them, especially papyrus and alphys i think. flowey might be a bit close to home for both him and dirk, remind them a bit of the AR. 

roxy plays all the routes and does excellently. defeats geno sans with unfair ease. probably does one of those really irritating no-hit runs where she gets thru geno without ever taking damage. people are slightly horrified by her laughing at parts of geno but she doesn’t give a shit. her favorites are the temmies. :3 but i think she would like undyne a lot too tbh. 

janey… jane would play neutral, then pacifist, and then be done, i think. unless she was pissed when she was playing, but i don’t think she has the patience for geno. i could see her doing a high LV neutral route out of frustration and then feeling a bit guilty about it after. her favorite would be toriel and she’s definitely rooting for toriel and asgore not to get back together. 

dave plays the pacifist run where you dont have to reset fully after photoshop flowey on account of never having killed anyone, because he heard that you can do a route like that and chose to not be attacking if he didn’t have to. would figure out the dodging + saying fun things bit pretty quick and have too much fun with it. his favorites are all the most hilarious random encounter monsters, sans, and nabstablook. and he races the snails too many times.  

rose plays neutral, then geno, then pacifist, just to be contrary. betrays herself by thinking muffet’s fangs are hot. actually disliked geno a lot but played it so she can talk loftily about its implications and dirk can’t do shit if he wants to debate with her because he flunked out of it. maybe her favorite is chara for the moral ambiguity and being influenced by the player’s decisions. (i generally subscribe to chara as the narrator theory.) also flowey. she would like flowey. 

karkat plays with the temmie armor. lmao. he complains the whole way about encounters being too hard but stays pacifist. he virulently complains about all the characters, calls toriel the only sensible one, and secretly likes mettaton. 

i dont know if i have enough solid opinions on the other characters… jade would love that you can throw the stick for the dogs. she and jake both pet lesser dog until the depths of the universe are plundered. terezi might like asriel, but her favorite part would the the color tile puzzle. if john tried geno he’d fail out when you have to kill the dogs. callie probably just watches others play with mild bemusement, and her favorite is alphys.

one thing i did notice for your prophet symbolism, diemen says himself he’s an unusually good finder, never having trouble with food, and you only end up in meat heaven because diemen grabs you and runs and takes you there, even though logically the sewer shouldnt have had a meat locker in it

Hmmm, that’s a pretty good point, come to think of it! It’s a bit more to Diemen’s benefit than the readers, so it sorta makes me think Mage, but then if he’s a seer roleplaying an active class like thief he’d come off that way to me anyway. I’d definitely say the appearance of meat heaven qualifies as miraculous.
