i really don’t want to get into it. but! here i go anyway, because i’m so tired of keeping quiet, i’m so tired of suffering in silence for fear if stirring shit back up, so here the fuck goes anyway. multiple times now i’ve had all my hard work ruined by ridiculously fucking false accusations that i’m supposedly a pedophile despite NO proof of it. i’ve had my shit wrecked by “guilt by association” situations, too, where i was supposedly responsible for the mistakes of a friend, shit i wasn’t even AWARE of. all it took was a small loud group of people who decided they wanted to destroy me, and they absolutely accomplished that.

being accused of being dangerous to my fanbase, or even my baby nephew and having people believe it without question (because so many folks take callout posts at face value without fact checking), crushed my fucking soul. i lost 75% of my monthly income and had to go back to relying on my parents for financial support. i’ll be straight up honest. when i took down all my social media last winter, it was because i deadass almost killed myself. i had a plan and everything. cops showed up. it got ugly.

i’m back from that brink, i have a wonderful support system, therapy and medication, but i never fully bounced back after that.

it’s almost a blessing i got riddled with back and wrist injuries and had surgery so that i’ve been forced to take time off from content creating and just take care of myself, it may have saved my life. but that doesn’t mean i don’t have a lot of fears and hangups about what to do from here, because i just don’t know. i’m not big enough online to stay afloat if someone decides to take a big loud shit on my reputation. i’m not safe, i’ve been doxxed, people know my name and address, and the risk vs reward ratio for content making is so skewed anymore that i have lost almost all of my passion to make. just. anything, really. why bother, if anyone can destroy everything that gives my life meaning in a single day?

i’ve stopped animating entirely, drawing became a chore long ago, my creative fire was completely snuffed. i don’t know how to come back, i’m honestly just taking it one day at a time because it’s all i CAN do to function. it’s an ongoing struggle, and will continue to be as long as the status quo remains. something’s got to give, but you can’t critique callout culture on tumblr without someone accusing you of being an apologist for this or that, so i flat out stopped trying. it’s not a fight i can win. you have no idea how badly i want to fade off into obscurity and disappear, take up a different alias and start over, but i can’t. i need to make a living. i’m in too deep. i put 15 years of hard work into building the viewership i have and establishing my presence on social media.

i’m sad and scared every single day. i don’t WANT to give up, because giving up is as good as a death sentence on my happiness. i don’t plan on quitting, not anymore. but fucking hell, can you blame me for feeling like it’s all kind of pointless? my future, which once seemed all figured out, is now a huge question mark. i’ll have to wait and see now, i’ll have to re-evaluate what it means to be a creator, and rediscover why i loved making art in the first place.

all i can ask of people is to take everything you read online with a grain of salt. fact check, be a critical thinker, and make your own conclusions. most of all, realize that lives are literally at stake. falsely calling people out is not a fucking game. we have to stop scaring content creators out of creating. we have to be better.

Saw a post where someone says Thomas Sanders “is almost 30 and actively encourages minors to send nsfw art.”

Found out that what actually happened was that a kid who purposefully took their age out of their bio before submitting the art because they were afraid Thomas might get in trouble later forgot about it and re added their age and then people went digging through Thomas’ blog after he made an ace positive post and found it. Dog pile ensues. Thomas apologizes for mistake and says he should have found out the person’s age before publishing.

Y’all have GOT to stop acting like a fucking gaggle of church gossips about this stuff. There is a universe of difference between accidentally accepting something from a minor and ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING it. But someone uses that phrasing and it just gets repeated and twisted even after the minor in question explains what happened.

People already act suspicious of gay men that are just “too” nice and I’m so tired of people constantly looking to prove someone is actually the worst kind of person ever just because they don’t agree with them.

Back up your arguments rather than digging for unrelated dirt.

Sorry to break the news, but you did not report the person behind that blog. Instead, you reported me. And I am still suffering the consequences.

I did not run that blog. Yes, they used my image. All my pictures from Facebook and Instagram, my statuses, even the captions. And then interspersed them with animal abuse images, fantasies about beastiality, other fucking disgusting sentiments.

You people found my Facebook, where I listed my wildlife rescue group. You didn’t think, for a moment, that it was odd that none of these abuse fantasies appeared on Facebook. A girl who was apparently willing to put her face, her location, the names of her family her local fucking vet clinic on her zoophilic Tumblr page, strangely had none of these thoughts on a just-as-public Facebook page.

Not one single person thought, “This is a bit odd, maybe I should reach out to this person just to confirm that it’s them.”

You people, high on some fantastical idea of justice, called the authorities. And I did not even know about the existence of the blog until the RSPCA showed up on my doorstep one night.

THEY, thankfully, had the sense to believe me. As soon as they showed me the page and I broke down in tears, they got the idea. So they told me to go to the police. The police palmed me off to ACORN (a cybercrime body) who dismissed the case because “nobody in the images was under the age of 18.”

Meanwhile, Tumblr had taken the page down, only for it to resurface again last year.

I then pursued a civil case. Emailed lawyers in my local city. They advised me only to take it to Tumblr, who shut down the page a second time. No further action was taken.

I never received another call from wildlife rescue because I was unable to prove that I did not run this disgusting blog. Wildlife is my biggest passion in the world and I may never work in that industry until I can clear my name.

So I messaged this page – report-a-predator. They told me to prove it – fair enough. So I sent them EVERYTHING. The screenshots, my emails to ACORN and SAPOL and Tumblr and the lawyers. They did not respond. I emailed them again, begging them to clear my name. They did not respond.

I am furious. I am fucking enraged that this post even still exists on their page, because the actions of this so-called “justice group” has directly impacted the life of an innocent person and they will do nothing to acknowledge it. Not even respond to a simple email. Not even take down the incriminating post.

I know my blog is tiny, I know nobody follows it, I know this will probably never be seen. But I am not going to be silent.

If you’re ever caught up in a whirlwind of pseudo-justice, maybe check the facts first.

I’m sorry, but I don’t quite understand the context of your my/your kink argument, esp. the examples you are using. While I do obviously agree that writing about something is not the same as condoning it, is that where the statement ends? I mean, if someone were to write exclusively about rape/pedophilia/sexual abuse and portray it in a positive light, I wouldn’t merely regard it as a kink (afaik kink implies practice, implies consent) and morally I would condemn it. Could you elaborate?

I have (at least) five answers.

1. The vast majority of the moral meaning lies in both the consumer’s and creator’s contexts. Martha writes a fic in which two sixteen-year-olds explore one another’s bodies. Pedophilia? Which country are you living in? What about the characters? What’s the time period and context? José writes a fic in which one character sexually abuses another but they both come to a better place. Endorsement of abuse? Darkfic? Hurt/comfort? Akane writes a senpai/kohai fic that mirrors material in the original manga. Is writing drawn from a culpable (see point 3) source automatically culpable itself? In specific, there’s an ancient tradition of rape-as-seduction fiction, and an enormous body of documentation showing that it’s a common female fantasy. Rape-as-seduction is rape culture, sure, but we’re embedded in it: see my point in the original post about ids. You cannot responsibly make a moral judgment unless you consider all of these, as well as the context of your own reaction.

2. Consider the creator’s point of view. You don’t know what the creator was thinking, and you don’t have the right to ask. The creator may be working through a painful experience and getting catharsis through fiction. The creator may be trying to convey as subtext that a particular situation is wrong and bad. (With or without success.) The creator may be fantasizing a situation without any intention of putting it into practice – see the very relevant quotations in my post. And, of course, the creator may be deliberately getting off on something that the vast majority of people in the creator’s culture consider morally wrong. (To whom is the creator accountable? Transformative media is created and consumed worldwide now.) You can’t know which of these is going on. Intent is not 100% of an immoral act, but when it comes to writing fiction, it’s a very, very high percentage.

3. Consider the consumer’s point of view. All of the possibilities in 2 apply, plus “I’m reading/viewing this to avoid doing it in real life.”

4. Consider the likely consequences of consuming the transformative work. There is no evidence that a person not already disposed to commit rape/incest/pedophilia/abuse is likely to be moved by fiction to commit those acts. There just isn’t. The evidence that people who are so disposed are more likely to commit those acts after viewing supportive media is, at best, mixed; there’s a lot of “post hoc versus propter hoc” going on there.

5. Finally we come to “What are you going to do with your moral condemnation”? You have carefully considered 1, 2, 3, and 4, and have determined that “applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeals to the prurient interest.” ( Roth v. United States, and you bet your booty I’m being ironic.) Are you going to draw a conclusion and move on? Are you going to speak privately to your friends about why the fic offended you? Or are you going to drop the wrath of Tumblr on the head of the offending creator?

If your answer is “unleash the hounds of Hell”, I think you’re the one who’s morally wrong. Period. Your moral act also has a context, and part of the context is the expected result. You are not going to change what the writer thinks about morality. You are going to create a mob of haters, most of whom are not going to present a reasoned argument based on evidence, but instead are going to tell the creator, and the world, that the creator is a terrible person. Not that the creator makes terrible works, but that they are a terrible person, and there is an ENORMOUS difference. The experience of the last (at least) fifteen years demonstrates that hate mobs are emotionally satisfying to the haters, are not a force for any moral good, and routinely drive their victims out of fandom and even off the internet.

tl;dr: It all depends. I lived through the fallout of 1970s feminist consciousness-raising groups, and I don’t need to watch the hi-def remake. I am sick beyond words of callout culture.
