re: dirk in canon vs. fanon

have we ever, like. is dirk ever mean to anyone in canon? other than the breakup with jake, he never yells at anyone, ever. he’s wildly nice to roxy even when he’s pretty clearly in an uncomfortable situation or frustrated.

yeah, he’s pretty sarcastic, but i’m pretty solid that he doesn’t ever make fun of someone meanly, only ever as teasing or a joke (dirk, not the AR or bgd).

i mean, hell, he’s even vaguely friendly to caliborn, who would be pretty easy to hate.

im not going to go digging through canon for evidence, but. yeah. thoughts.

i did dig through the canon for evidence and yeah you’re right the absolute closest dirk ever comes to a mean word is saying Jake should believe in stuff more critically (which is true and Jake’s willful ignorance hurts Dirk PERSONALLY) and that Jane should be less skeptical (and we see how badly Jane’s skepticism hurts roxy) other than the time he breaks up with Jake

Dirk is literally, canonically probably the sweetest kid in the comic lmao

dirk is absolutely an annoying STEM major

john (MBA or something): hi

dirk: Your degree is pointless; your career will be obsolete in five years tops. You will never be able to do what I do. Have fun with your easy m

dirk’s, like, introductory description includes reference to him being a pop culture enthusiast and his main interests include philosophy and history , and his interest in “Stem” pretty much never shows its face in the comic outside of being the result of a handful of projects he worked on across his teenage years

It’s to the point that even Bro–who is the worst dirk possible–engages in art and makes comics and stuff far, far more than he ever engages in robotics. You’re thinking uncharitably of Jade or maybe Jake here, not Dirk. Or, you know, Caliborn who is the exact kind of annoying mra who would value “practical” skills over art so

nah

#[this has] … everything to do with villainizing a gay boy who got put thru runs of shit in canon

Oh my god. oh my fucking god this was just a bad dirkjohn joke don’t be a geek

lmao for what its worth ive been bottling this up for more than a little while, i’m not actually accusing you of that or anything.

What i’m getting at is just that a culture built up around Dirk that is very negative and never really dispersed pretty much as soon as his character was introduced in 2013-14, and the narrative produced by it hasn’t been substantially questioned.

so it’s still pretty much normalized, and a lot of misreadings of him have it at it’s source. I’m not saying you’re tryin to do anything like that–just that the way our fandom approaches Dirk as a character p much does it naturally.

It’s just a joke, sure– but I don’t think I need to explain how jokes aren’t mutually exclusive with backing up cultural narratives, so since it showed up on my dash and upset me I figured I’d take the chance on broaching the subject. That’s p much all there is to it, there’s no moral accusation here.

Just an observation of how the only explicitly gay male character has ended up being considered, in ways I’d like to change if possible.

dumb college/profession au/future shit

I know the most common thing to do with dirk is to make him go into robotics or engineering and I GET it, but on the other hand: artist dirk

dirk is among the kids we see with the most actual artistic talent (the others being rose and roxy; dave isn’t bad before he adopts shitpost art as his signature style, but, well, you do you, kid). as far as homestuck goes, his style is basically as realistic and true-to-life as it gets.

can you imagine dirk doodling in all the edges of his margins. dirk quietly wishing he could pursue art but thinking it’s not “serious” enough, telling himself it’s not a “real” profession, going into engineering or robotics or something similar instead and everyone being like “oh of course dirk would” but all the kid wants to do is draw, he just thinks it’s shitty and embarrassing and “it’s like having a degree in creative writing, the fuck can you do with it”

jake, who is majoring in anthropology but can’t decide on a minor because everything else is too damned interesting, discovers dirk’s private (sfw) sketchbook and is astounded. dirk is humiliated. jake manages to convince him to at least MINOR in art. dirk tries to amend it to a minor in art history but jake will not stand for it

I just remembered that even though I fucking Despise bro strider the artistic talent is even mentioned there (dave says something about mimicking his bro’s comics before he adopts the 8Ys of sbahj) and I’m telling you: artist dirk

its time for a dirkjake song bcuz of course it is what did you come to this blog expecting

[Strong Hand | CHVRCHES | Dirk Strider ❤ Jake English]

Why don’t you tell me
What do you need?
There is a blank page
For you

Give me the bones of
What you believe
Maybe they’ll save you
From me

Will I be the strong hand
Keeping you safe
Or will I break you
In half

And you will never
Be under my thumb
But you are not your
Own man

How it will grind you
Into the ground
If you should try to
Hold me

When the pressure’s building for a great white hope
Do you give up things that you love?
And the pressure’s building ‘til it takes you whole
Can you go back on your own word?

can we be done with weeaboo dirk

like

what year is this. can we not. are we done? are we done. please.

honestly the only weaboo dirk i want to see in this the year of 2k17 is Dirk embarassingly cosplaying 9S and being even more embarassed at Jake cosplaying 2B but also appreciating how it shows off his ass too much to want to stop these shenanigans, pls deliver this to my doorstep personally and then we can retire this motif for good

Have you ever given thought to just why it is that Dirk doesn’t really seem affected by trickster mode outside of appearance? Any theories? Thats one thing the really bugs me and I just can’t wrap my brain around why he would be such an exception

He’s a Heart player, basically. Just as he sees through into the Core of his friends’ identities, so too his fundamental Core is very hard to change in any meaningful way.

All of the Trickster kids’ actions reflect their inclinations and powersets as reflective of their Classpects (more on that some other time) so Dirk’s Heart nature shining through isn’t particularly unique. But maybe a more useful comparison to understanding it requires us to look at a different orange character with existential issues tied to his inherent, inescapable identity as Himself: Davesprite.

Davepeta lets on that the core of Davesprite’s issues were down to considering himself marginal, irrelevant, and unwanted. It had nothing really to do with his friends and everything to do with his experience of himself as inherently an Extra Dave, the same way Lil Hal felt. What saves him from this?

Nepeta, the Rogue of Heart. By stealing his identity for his benefit, Nepeta frees Davesprite from his own identity, allowing him to experience ego-death and achieve a state close to complete Enlightenment and allowing him to understand the true meaning of his existence as Davesprite in the first place. Davepeta also benefits the audience by cluing us into this information, and Jade (in ways we’ll get into when I write about Jade soon).

So yeah. Essentially, the aspect of Heart is innately linked to a person’s true, undiluted self–so it’s no surprise Dirk’s undiluted self is strong enough to destroy the effects of any corrupting influence.
