so im just going to talk about my favorite dirkjake character beat for a minute

Which is this, because like even beyond all the highminded artsy movie references and deep-borne cosmic love thing with these two, this is probably the biggest reason Jake fell for Dirk

Jake is a boy who tries to get into debates about movies literally no one else cares about. Jake loves every movie, but more than that, Jake wants to TALK about every movie, and be really loud about how much it fascinates and delights him every which way.

Jake wants to TALK about his movies, and there’s apparently some movies that he literally can’t get anyone to talk about him with.

Except Dirk.

Because even if Dirk thinks a movie is the worst pile of shit ever put on the earth, he still won’t be able to help himself when it comes to talking about it and arguing about its merits (or demerits) with Jake.

And not only that but Dirk is also Jake’s Cool Best Friend who sneaks him early screenings of NEW MOVIES!!! And Jake is such a dork about the privilege. And fuuuck they’re just so cute and i love that they get to watch as many movies as they want now and argue about them forever ;_; they’re happy

“Hey, Dirk, you got a minute?”

Dirk looked up from his book to see Jake’s smiling face
before him.  Of course, with a Jake
smile, he never knew quite what to expect, but at least he was happy.  Dirk thumbed down his page to save it, then
set it aside.

“What’s up?”

“Well, I’ve been working a bit on a bit of a… project. A
project that I know you have quite a bit of experience with yourself.  I was hoping you’d do your boyfriend a little
favor and help him out?”

Dirk had to stifle a smile, but the truth was he was
curious.  What could Jake need?  Robotic help? Philosophy help? Sunglasses
help? Dirk was pretty good at all of those.
He noticed for the first time that Jake was holding something behind his
back, not even bothering to be subtle.

“What do you need, Jake?” He motioned to whatever Jake was
holding.  “No need to hide it.”

Jake looked flustered for a moment, before taking a piece of
paper from behind his back and handing it to Dirk.  “You have the know-how about this sort of
thing, I figured you’d know the best approach.”

Dirk was a little confused as to why Jake was being so vague
until he looked at the paper.  On it was
a very crudely drawn picture, apparently done with colored pencils, of an anthropomorphic
wolf.  The wolf was wearing a pair of
glasses, glowing slightly, and had a very familiar hairstyle on the top of its
head.  The word “Hopefoot” was scribbled
in the margins of the page.

Dirk looked up at Jake with a face more stoic than he had
ever mustered before.

“No.”

“Aww, come on, Dirk!”

“No.”

“Look,” Jake said, folding his arms and pouting. “I’ve seen
the stuff you hide in your desk.  You are
a veritable pro in the regard of human-like depictions of critters.”

Dirk’s façade broke slightly as he blushed. “That is private
material! And you’re not understanding, it’s much more than just that.  It’s artistic! Why are we talking about this?”

“Dirk, you’re being ridiculous.  This is not some big stinkin’ thing here.”

“It’s embarrassing and I’d just as soon drop it.”

Dirk made a big show of handing the paper back to Jake, but
faltered when he saw Jake’s face fall.

Jake sighed. “I know it’s silly, but I was just hoping it
could be this silly thing we did together. Please, Dirk?”

The Prince of Heart’s heart, of course, melted.  He was being as dick and he knew it.  Time to make amends.  He fished a mechanical pencil out of his
shorts and clicked it.  Jake perked up.

“I suppose I could help you with the design a bit. C’mere
and tell me what you were thinking.”

Dirk patted the seat on the couch next to him.  Jake grinned. He made his way next to his boyfriend and sidled right up.

“So I was thinking he’d also have a horse for a boyfriend?”

“Now you’re speaking my language.”

My bud @revolutionaryduelist has a birthday today, and I figured the best gift I could give him was a bit of self-indulgent fluff.  Happy 24th, man.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa this was so cute i can’t believe you managed to get me to conceptually enjoy my two greatest enemies: the cold and waking up early

let dirk have….cute fun surprise birthdays from his friends………im weeping im so glad tHANK YOU………

It just occurred to me that Jake and Dirk might have to be careful after they get back together, because Dirk could very well just do whatever Jake wants, even if he doesn’t want to, because he’s afraid to be “selfish” or some such nonsense, perhaps without even realizing he’s doing it. And that’s not very healthy in a relationship. It sounds dangerous because it’s something that might be hard for either of them to notice at first.

Definitely true.

I mean. In my view, relationships always require being careful–any long-term relationship is going to have ways people can hurt each other, that’s part of the deal. There’s lots of other ways Dirk and Jake’s relationship could go south: Dirk’s self-loathing not being communicated enough, Jake’s escapism and self-delusion taking hold again, etc, etc.

This is as true of Dirk potentially self-sacrificing for Jake needlessly as it is of, say, Rose indulging her carefully cultivated posturing at the expense of her communication with Kanaya which is something we saw put a great deal of stress on Kanaya in the comic.

All relationships require balance. All relationships require constant communication and assessing your own and each other’s needs. All relationships come with risk of pain. That’s kinda just the way of it.

you know when mario gets the star? mario fuckin’ CHEATED to get that star

stormsbourne:

dirk does not own any video game consoles of his own but he has been roped into several sessions of gaming with roxy, who owns literally all the consoles. even the ones that aren’t out yet for us. that’s right. she absolutely has a ps5. anyway roxy is a nintendo gal at heart and one day she lends dirk and jake her gamecube for some fun and gives them a few games. they make their way through a few rounds of super smash (literally the game they were playing in my most recent fic chapter, obviously) and a couple bouts of mario kart. they poke through some of the other games she handed over, but most of them appear to be single player ones they’d have to take turns at.

“oh, here we go,” jake says, and hands one over.

it’s fuckin mario party.

dirk loses. dirk loses every round. it should not be humanly possible to be this bad at minigames. jake keeps getting items that let him steal dirk’s stuff. dirk keeps landing on spaces that make him lose coins. dirk lands on a star and doesn’t have enough coins to buy it thanks to a bad landing last round. meanwhile, jake is swimming in coins. the star moves and through happenstance jake ends up catapulted to the other side of the board and lands on the star 2 turns later. jake wins every bonus condition star. once, the game gives dirk exactly one pity star for having the fewest stars.

jake is delighted. he’s not BAD at video games, but this is the first one he’s been genuinely good at! every time dirk grouses and suggests they play something else jake begs off one more round. he starts making bets with dirk to keep him engaged. “all right strider, if you win this one then I’ll do all the dishes for a week!” “ok dirk this time what’s on the line is trash duty. are you going to be able to bring it for real?” dirk cannot back down from a dare. unfortunately for him, his luck never improves. he has a week’s worth of chores on his shoulders and the only reason he doesn’t make jake sleep on the couch is because jake is very persuasive when he tries to be. (there may also have been a bet involved with that too. dirk isn’t telling)
