Jade’s parental unit, as the Pattern Breaking parental unit, has a much larger variety of strange, off putting interests.  Dad has FANCIFUL HARLEQUINS, Mom has EXSQUISITE WIZARDS, and Bro has RADICAL PUPPETS.  Grandpa has not one, but FOUR such interests, of the same descriptive two word format.  They’re all just as dumb though.  One reason among several for this was to create an element of uncertainty over what kind of item Jade would prototype with .  And by uncertainty, I mean misdirection, which is what I always mean by uncertainty.

Notice the colors of the lights in each room.  Orange, pink, and cyan, corresponding with Dirk, Roxy, and Jane.  The items have a loose correlation with the other three guardians too.  Knights in that Dirk is a skilled swordsman.  Roxy’s land is full of pyramids, Jane was grandpa’s long estranged blue lady.  You see how the gears are always turning.  Not only does everything mean something.  It turns out everything means EVERYTHING.  Now you know.

Andrew Hussie, Homestuck Book 3 Commentary

My pal @icel just sort of handed me the commentary for book 3, which is rad cause it turns out to confirm I’ve been right in arguing that Grandpa’s home decor reflects the Alphas for months. (Obviously doesn’t prove anything else linked there, though I stand by all of it. Just saying.)

I don’t normally argue based on Word of God cause I don’t like speculating pointlessly on Hussie as a person but hey! This is part of a product made for fans, and also it takes a lot of the legwork out of me getting to say I’m right, so like fuck it 😉

Homestuck Amusement Park Headcanons

Suggested by: @asnailinthighhighs

John: warily eyes the pastry booths bc he still has a deep mistrust for baked goods thanks to the Betty Crocker incident aka literally the apocalypse. Plays a (rigged) wack-a-mole game and gets frustrated when he keeps losing. Terezi makes fun of him so he whips out the hammer of zillyhoo and ah, crushes the game, so to speak. His prize is a giant bunny. He puts it back in the box.

Jade: sees one of those rodeo electronic bull things and goes oh that looks fun! Everyone is like uhhh Jade that can get pretty wild are u sure?? Karkat bets Jade that she won’t last 5 mins, oh really Karkat? 5 minutes? She sits on that bucking bronco for an entire hour making uncomfortable and spite fueled eye contact with Karkat the entire time. She only gets off because there’s a line.

Dave: wants to go on all the big rides and drags Karkat along despite Karkat complaining very loudly the entire time. Sorry Karkles, you scared of heights? You a scaredy Kat? A scaredy Karkat? Fuck you Dave, I’m fine! Dave drags him on the biggest rollercoaster in the entire park, they get off and Karkat says wow that was actually pretty fun! Dave’s hair is a mess, he looks inches from perma-death, that was horrible oh god. Not a word, Rose, he says. She and Kanaya are definitely not snickering behind their hands.

Rose: makes a goddamn beeline with Kanaya in tow to the haunted house ride because fuck yes she wants to see some creepy ass shit. If y’all have ever been in an amusement park haunted house, you know how vastly disappointed she was by the lame jump-scares and cheap monsters. Kanaya made it up to her by taking her to the Tunnel O’ Love™ and Rose was significantly cheered up.

Kanaya: isn’t a huge fan of non-blood food but v intrigued by all the fried stuff. Why Is It Fried? Does It Add Flavor? Not really, Rose tells her, it’s mostly just another way humanity likes to push itself closer and closer to its own imminent demise. Only now they’ve roped the trolls and carapacians into it. Oh, Kanaya says. She tries a fried Twinkie and sucks the filling out w her sick rainbow drinker/ vampire skills. Delicious. A single tear trails down Rose’s cheek. I have never been more in love w you.

Terezi: that scene with Toph and the scam artists in ATLA? Basically picture that. It’s one of those rubber duck games where they’re all floating in the pool and at the bottom of them is a different color and that’s how big a prize you get, thing is, Terezi can smell what’s on the bottom. She wins Vriska all the prizes and the dude running the booth is sweating and has to write her an IOU that John won’t let Terezi cash in on because that’s cheating and that’s wrong!

Jane: goes around with Jade and Roxy and Callie critiquing the food booths on their baking skills. She absolutely loathes that everything is fried bc it’s a cheap tactic to make weak bakers stronger! She tries a funnel cake and immediately changes her mind. CrockerCorp releases its own line of fried food that fall. Roxy calls her a sellout but eats it all anyways bc it’s just That Good.

Jake: finds one of those carnival shooter games and one of the big stuffed animal prizes is a gigantic rainbow dash my little pony and,,,he sees Dirk eyeing it. He doesn’t say anything, but Jake Knows. He tells Dirk he has to run off to the “little lads” room for a second, but he goes back to the shooting game, crushes the fuck out of those targets with the wimpy water gun, and presents Dirk with this oversized goddamn pony. It is touching and romantic for everyone involved.

Dirk: tries to show off to Jake by doing that strength test where u slam the hammer down and try to ring the bell at the top, he makes it about half the way up and he’s like fuck yeah that’s pretty fuckin’ good. Jake goes wow golly that’s impressive! Mind if I give it the old college try? Dirk is like pffft go for it, still flexin his muscles trynna show off and shit. Jake casually slams it down and rings the goddamn bell so hard it almost flies off the top. Dirk just stands there with his eyes v wide behind his shades while Jake is like gosh! Must have been buggered, huh?

Roxy: goes on every single ride she is living for today y’all, Callie is too short for most of the rides but Roxy promises to dab at the top of every coaster so Callie can spot her from where she’s watching down below. They share an ice cream sundae and Roxy gives Callie the cherry on top bc it’s “a cherry for a cherub!”

Sollux: idk about amusement parks near y’all but I live right by cedar point and there’s a coaster called Gemini so uhhh he and Aradia just do that. All day. Sollux rides this rollercoaster 53 times, turns to Aradia, says “what if bees had yaoi hands would that be fucked up or what” then passes out for a week.

I just got hit with the obvious fact that caliborn and gamzee fucking have Snapchat so the kids can keep talking to them sometimes

Now all I can think about is Dirk and Jake finding ways to troll Caliborn together.

Like, Dirk is working on a robot or something by the bed and Jake is like “DIRK I HAD THE BEST IDEA. come over and rub my tummy let’s send Caliborn some lewd pornographies”

Dirk is like

“.

.

.

Ok.”

They put Caliborn’s resulting disgusted, shrill man-baby scream protests up on Youtube and it gets like 7 billion hits.

Gamzee texts them back with like

“that was…

PRETTY FUCKIN HOT

motherfuckers

CAN I GET AN ENCORE

;o)”

They block him. Gross.

HSE – Alchemy Pt. II: The Cruxite Artifact

Hey, everyone. In this episode, we finally close out the tutorial section and unpack some of the deeper philosophical implications Homestuck works off.

That means going into the Biblical references built into the Alchemy system. We contrast the book of Genesis against the Gnostic creation myth, go over what Gnosticism entails in some detail, and what the main difference is between Gnosticism and traditional Christianity.

What do both stories tell us about Homestuck’s priorities? What does it mean for Homestuck to so strongly embrace the latter? And what does that approach say about the idea of original sin?

Coming soon, we’ll have a short video on the Medium, covering the general layout of a Sburb game. After that, we’ll open up the next round of video votes, giving Patrons the ability to choose what game mechanics in Sburb they want me to cover, and in what order!

That’s all for now.

Keep rising.

HSE – Alchemy Pt. II: The Cruxite Artifact

Curses, you’re totally right. My thought process has been thwarted by non-linear chronology and hyper-personalized venues of self-actualization. I honestly have a hard time grasping your proposed hyperflexibility of the classpect system just because of the sheer enormity of the concept and the fact that Homestuck is really the only media to ever utilize a categorical system so responsive to the individual. My brain is hard-wired to think of such systems as mostly rigid.

Mine too, frankly. It’s why I think Homestuck’s system is so powerful and so worth championing–well-understood, it’s more than just a hyperflexible mythology system. It’s also a really useful writing and creativity tool.

(1/3)Let me start by saying that I absolutely love your essays on the classpect system, after reading them I felt I was seeing Homestuck in an entirely new light. In fact, it’s because of this that I wanted to run an idea I’ve had about a certain classpect by you. That classpect being Seer of Blood. For the longest time, I considered just how this particular combination would actually work.

(2/3)We know that the Seer class experiences visions of the future through the vector of their aspect(or perhaps guided by their aspect), and this is clearly demonstrated by Terezi seeing the future as the myriads of choices the players can make while Rose seems to be capable of seeing the “true” path or the most fortunate path. So how could the Blood aspect, or rather bonds, be used to see the future?

(3/3)I thought about what a bond really was, and realized that a bond is simply the accumulation of shared memories and experiences between individuals, in other words a shared past. Then I remembered Signless, the visions that prompted him to start the revolution were of Beforus, of the past. I think that rather than being a pre-cog like other Seers, a Seer of Blood is actually a post-cog who uses their visions to empathize with their players and unite them.

1) Thank you so much! I’m really glad you liked them, and I hope we go on to learn a lot more about the system together 😀 I’m sure I’m wrong about some stuff and I’m sure there’s more to learn–it’s part of why I’m so excited for Hiveswap!

2) Yeah, I’d say I more or less agree! The only point I’d differ on is that I don’t think Terezi and Rose are specifically Pre-Cogs, and I don’t think a Seer of Blood is necessarily a Post-Cog, though the Sufferer certainly experiences his powers that way. I’d say all types of Seers could likely develop both properties.

I say this because time simply isn’t linear in Homestuck at all. Hypothetically, if none of the seers had any limits on their power, then for the Sufferer remembering past bonds would inevitably lead him from Beforus to LE, and from LE to the Alpha kids, from the Alpha kids to the Betas, and back around–though obviously, as his focus is Blood, he seems to cap out with the Beforans.

But even that’s more complicated, because the Sufferer isn’t technically remembering the past, but rather an alternate timeline/universe entirely, isn’t he? We saw it with the kids: The beta kid and alpha kid timelines are actually mostly concurrent to one another, despite the fact that the Betas created the Alpha’s timeline.
Jake and Jade grow up loosely in tandem.

So whether they’re inclined to remember moments related to the future or to the past, what it seems to me all Seers are mostly able to do is see sideways–into other universes, other timelines. That makes the concept of pre- or post- cognition tricky, because different universes’ temporal envelopes are wholly irrelevant to one another’s.

Terezi distributes some pretty remarkable recollection of her own timeline and the results of changing it at various points, which seems technically post-cog? Though again we fall into that timeline ambiguity. And while it’s not in canon exactly, it seems easy for me to imagine pre-cog showing up for a Seer of Blood–seeing someone and instantly knowing you’ll be friends or lovers, for example? That kind of thing.

anyway none of this is to say you’re wrong at all. It’s definitely correct that the Sufferer has a heavy disposition towards elements of reality that, through various vague and complex mechanics, read as “Past” events from his perspective. I just find the Time mechanics in Homestuck irresistible to think about because they’re so fucking weird x3.

I also just don’t want to imply that anything about my view of the Classpects implies any Class ever has to “just” be X or Y, you know? I don’t even think the archetypes I claim the story puts forth for the class pairs work that way, which is something I’ve been thinking about and needing to clarify for a long time because I’m worried I haven’t been clear enough about it. So let’s get into this tangent for a minute, if you’ll indulge me.

Maid/Sylphs as Fairies, for example. I do think it’s definitely true those classes are coded that way in the story of Homestuck, and that they flesh out our understanding of what their key verb means, and so what they can do/how they think and process reality.

Now, does that mean all True Maid/Sylph OCs, in my view, should parse themselves in terms of fairies? No, I don’t think so. I think Homestuck uses the symbol logic of fairies to clue the reader in, but there are myriad ways you could use mythology–or simply narrative– to get to the concept of a Player creating their Aspect or being made of it or both.

It would be just as evocative and powerful, in my view, to base a “Maker” informed by the mythological idea of Creator Goddesses, or even a specific creator goddess. You could go with Summon Spirits from JRPGs, who embody many of the same tropes of elementals while being a bit distanced from the idea of fairy-dom.

You could get more specific. It would be pretty easy to imagine a Fairy class Hope player who literally becomes or already is an Angel–they’re Made of Faith, after all.

The classpects are hyperflexible, and I like the Unifying Myth concept because it gives us handy ways to interpret any individual member of a given classpect to specificity. Or, of course, you can use no unifying myth or broad historical archetype at all, or make up your own consistent worldbuilding for whatever you’re thinking of making.

To personalize and flesh out the character by drawing on archetypes and mythology outside of the base Classpect system in order to give resonance and meaning to the classpect that is relevant to that specific character, the way furries work for Jade or Trolls for Callie or Rainbow Drinkers for Kanaya or so on.

So I definitely think The Sufferer reads strongly as a Post-Cog. I’m way more hesitant to allow myself to say a phrase like “Seer of Blood is post-cog”, though, because I’m unnervingly aware people might be starting to give a shit what I have to say? And I absolutely never, ever want to be limiting.

A Seer of Blood can and will be anything. The only limit is what kind of story you want to tell with one, and how much thought and nuance to want to put into the telling of it. Homestuck gives you a lot of tools to build the same kind of compelling nuance it does itself in your own storytelling, that’s all.

Sorry if I’m rambling! I wasn’t expecting to come out with this right now, and I’m sure there are more elegant and coherent ways of saying it, but I really felt like I needed to get this out there. Thanks for giving me the chance and sorry for the wall of text!

I JUST FINISHED THE REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA ANIME AND IT KILLED MY WHOLE FUCINH LIFE. WHERE IS MY CHILD UTENA AND ANTHY IM FUCKIN HAPPY FOR U, U HAVE NO IDEA okok breaaathiiiing. I have classes in 6 hours. My heart is on the floor and I need content, any tips? Also, should I watch the movie? The homestuck ending didn’t hit me this fucking hard in the head w/ the ending. Also do u have opinions on the ending of utena? I sorely need to hear someone’s else on this (1/2)

(2/2) oh and thanks?? Ur anthy malice tag was what piqued my interest in the anime, but I’ll pass for callmearcturus ask box too, because a gifset in their blog was the last drop in the glass that drowned me in utena hell. But anyway, love u and thanks! Have a nice day/night :*

Ok so (1) ha ha you forgot to hit anon the second time so now i get to follow a new Utena blog >:))

But (2) Watching the movie will not help you at FUCKING ALL in understanding the ending other than making some fairly obviously implied things more explicit but the entire movie is a goddamn trip so I do definitely reccomend watching it, if only for the lesbians and eye candy and surreal symbol dream logic. It’s a fun watch.

I have opinions on the ending of Utena, but like…Utena’s literally as dense as Homestuck and as meaningful to me, I could spend years of my life talking about Utena. If you have particular questions, it would help.

For now I’ll say that I think Utena’s Gnostic references and themes are as important to it as Homestuck’s. Akio and Caliborn are directly comparable as Yaldabaoth figures, and Anthy and Calliope are directly comparable as Sophias. It’s incredibly fascinating stuff to consider. So if you’re interested in both properties and want to figure out their endings in more detail, I suggest looking into that stuff.

I swear this isn’t on purpose, but I’m actually posting the next Homestuck video in the next couple days, which happens to go into the Gnostic stuff in some detail. That might be a good place to start, if you’re interested. At least that’s what I intended it to be, so I certainly Hope I succeeded!

I WILL SAY THIS MUCH: I think Utena herself is perfectly fine. She just left Akio’s world, but Akio’s world is not reality. Anthy went to find her. And find her she will.

You can’t deny a goddess, after all.

ps: @alotofmomos @nelfes hey looks like our efforts helped reel one in!!! Anthy’s Malice >:)
