Thinking With Others

I want to take a minute to talk about one of my biggest influences–Mike Rugnetta’s Idea Channel.

Mike’s show has…moved me. Changed me. Over the years, I think Idea Channel has made me a better person, sharpened my ability to approach difficult subjects, and increased my appreciation for a lot of things I love.

Most of all, Mike’s work has taught me that it is better to love thoughtfully–yet shamelessly–in pursuit of trying to understand what keeps us all engaged with the mind-boggling fictional multiverse sprawling through our culture, than it is to dismiss things off-hand as meaningless dribble.

It’s no exaggeration to say that without Idea Channel, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing, and if I’m ever able to connect an idea or two together between something I love and some wider element of culture, well–I owe that to him in good part.

So check out his videos if you haven’t! He’s got one on Homestuck, one on Undertale, one on Steven Universe–and tons of others that’ll open you up to whole new ideas and worlds.

Thanks for everything, Mike. I’m excited to follow along on Crash Course: Mythology and whatever else you decide to do.

Thinking With Others

sometipsygnostalgic:

Hey Homestucks,

You may have heard of a project called Land of Fans and Music, or LOFAM, which is basically an album of homestuck music. All produced by talented fans, all uploaded on Bandcamp, all downloadable for free.  This is the fourth release!! You can go look up the other albums this team has produced, alongside the newly released Ancestral album and the Beforus album, and my personal favourite, Seatbelt Safebee…. a cautionary tale of why you should always wear your seatbelt if you dont want Mettaton to destroy you with an army of bees…

The people working on the project are all amazing. Lambda, the person I’m reblogging this from, has been working for LOFAM since the project started, and this album has been in the making for years. We have some amazing talent in the works including musicians who worked on Homestuck itself. such as Marcy Nabors, who composed Solar Voyage and Renewed Return in Volume 10 among other great tracks!!!

Anyway I hope you give it a listen when it’s released. Give these musicians some recognition for all their hard work. I’m certainly going to be there for the stream. It’ll be nice to do some homestuck stuff before Hiveswap is released, build up the excitement!

i think the finale arc of the adventure zone is literally the most fucking powerful piece of media ever created and here’s why

you know that opening narration in Watchmen where rorshach is all “they’ll look up and scream save us, and i’ll look down and whisper no” and it’s all very gritty and dramatic and uhuhu sheeple

it’s literally the total fucking opposite of that

the apocalypse is bearing down, a hundred billion voices screaming in cacophonous and deafening unison GIVE UP AND DIE, and the entire world shares a glance, and takes a breath, and looks up and says:

No.

And I don’t believe I have ever seen something with such a powerful faith in humanity. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something that describes such an unshakeable connectedness, such an unbreakable will to exist. The apocalypse is happening and people are still fighting.

And I think that especially now, especially in times of such upheaval and uncertainty, and now with the threat of nuclear war looming from the darker corners of our political houses, we need more than ever stories that say what this one does–and I have never seen it more clearly and more beautifully communicated.

It’s not over until you stop fighting.

hey writers

write-like-a-freak:

friendly reminder that you are allowed to write selfishly. Your writing is allowed to be self-indulgent. You can have self-insert characters. Your stories can be pure wish-fulfillment.

Sometimes we get so caught up in wanting to please the theoretical reader that we forget our writing is first and foremost for us. It’s our art, our self-expression, and we do it for our passion and our joy.

Use other voices and perspectives to grow your own perspective and bring more to your writing. But you don’t owe it to anyone to create art for them, the way they want it.

Your writing can be a love letter to yourself.

I ended up having a really interesting conversation with some people at the bus stop today. They were getting out of some sort of ‘clean and sober’ meeting and had starting saying how they were so bored because they didn’t have anything to do, and had to stay at home because all their old friends would pull them back. So I said something like, ‘So this is the time to do all the stuff your parents told you they didn’t have money/time for!’

“Whatcha mean?”

“You know, like when you were five and you REALLY wanted to have that toy or do that thing and you were like, ‘Please mom please I gotta have this I gotta go do this’ and they went ‘Hell no you think I’m paying for that do you want to goddamn EAT?’ “

And this light went on in their eyes. The lady is going to go check thrift stores for an Easybake Oven and I told her about Wilton cake decorating classes. The dude is going to Griffith Park and ride horses, because, ‘I always wanted to be a cowboy, and you can’t drink when you’re on a horse ‘cause you’ll fucking die!’

Fuck it. This is what being an adult is. Sure it’s bills and work and relationships, but damn it, it’s also time to do the things you LIKE.

I signed up for a free class/lecture on Water Gardens. I’m going. It’s time.

Jill. Jill you are wonderful.
