and also all these dynamics can be applied almost 1:1 in reverse because that’s how they fucking roll

This is also true about the Prospit clan, and about the way Prospits and Dersites generally feel about each other. It’s pretty amusing when people dunk on Jake while also talking up how much they love Jade, because being mean to Jake is maybe the fastest way I can think of to get Jade pissed at you???

The same is true about like, Dave and Jake, or Dirk and John. Dirk loves Jake and Jane so much he’d p much lose it constantly being aware that John and Jade are their kids, John talking to Dave and Dirk would lead to him understanding Dave’s childhood a LOT better, like.

Idk I could do this forever, the eight human kids are a mobius knot of interwoven friendship, acceptance and mutual love and it’s the best thing tbh.

john and jake and jade are best friends who chat for days at a time about stupid inane shit constantly and never feel overwhelmed or drained in each other’s company

jane and jade finally get to bond and jane has a target that is accepting of her directing her nurturing/motherly/nanna-esque feelings on her without being afraid of telling her when it’s too much and jade gets the unique and wonderful experience of having a mother-ish figure who loves her and they support each other and gossip constantly and roll their eyes at john and jake together, fondly

jake and jane have these two unambiguously Good Kids that came out of their combined DNA to marvel over and they both get to experience that goodness every day without having to be miserable in an ill considered romantic relationship together and they are able to bond again platonically and work through the many issues that plagued their relationship and become very protective of one another and their delightful ecto offspring

jade loves to hear stories about grandma english and idolizes her, john loves to hear stories about johnny crocker and thinks he’s a riot, jade loves to hear stories about nanna (from john AND from nannasprite(s) directly!) and jake is absolutely flabbergasted (and a bit embarrassed) at the adventures grandpa harley got up to, what the fuck!

they love big family dinners and watching movies beneath a pile of stuffed animals and fuzzy blankets with plants hanging from every available hook and rafter and the smell of gingerbread permeating every square foot of the crocker estate

jake and jade have 12 dogs and they track mud everywhere and jane loves them but is also going to choke a bitch if someone doesn’t clean those paw prints off the floor, john, stop wrestling with them, john egbert do you hear me

Sometimes its hard to imagine the sheer devoted ferocity with which Jake would cosplay as Bayonetta.

Just curious, are your views on the aspects somewhat different now or are they relatively the same?

Mostly the same, but I’d say I have a cleaner language in my mind when thinking about Rage, Hope and Light in particular. There’s always been a bizzare sort of conceptual overlap in my head surrounding those three, and the descriptions really helped clear it up for me. I’d also say I have a somewhat more nuanced view, since interestingly, the descriptions suggest the Aspects themselves have Active/Passive tendencies! I’d previously thought Active and Passive applied only to Classes and dreaming moons, but apparently not.

Oh also I’m feeling smug as fuck that after getting so much blowback from self-professed Homestuck “experts” that Jake English isn’t selfish vis a vis his Page status (I’m not talking about Vikomprenas, he’s cool and a fun guy to talk to about this stuff) the descriptions went and implied HOPE could well be inherently selfish, making Jake be coded as selfish no matter what you believe about Class designation :). Maybe now the fandom can access him as something other than a selfless, put-upon, pitiful woobie?? Hahahahahaha

I know I sound kinda biting there but honestly it’s all in fun for me, I’m just glad the information we’ve gotten is so compelling and interesting. Seriously though @ fandom at large? Dirkjake is canon and it’s probably time to reassess our views on the Alphas as a group. Secret tip: They all love each other and fuck up and they fucking rock and are the best part of Homestuck.

that he knows exactly how devastatingly handsome all his friends think he is and employs it to great effect to manipulate events into playing out the way he wants them to and is deeply terrified of anyone discovering how genuinely quick witted, intelligent and overall capable he is and can be, including himself. who wants to be burdened with that. potential is hard to live up to, but ppl underestimating you forever means they’re always easily impressed, right?

my favorite jake english headcanon is that he’s a tangled lonely ball of frustrated emotions that has no idea how to handle conflict or relationships and would rather tie a sticky situation into ten thousand more knots through pretended ignorance and deferred or intentionally misdirected action than own up to feeling a single negative emotion about someone to their face because holy shit, don’t we all know, confrontation is hard

my favorite thing about jake english is that he’s one of the few compelling characters i’ve ever seen that successfully walks the tropes of canonically physically attractive, mentally deeply introverted, outwardly and arguably intentionally ineffective but secretly brilliant and oh yeah he has a really cool bisexuality arc actually defined by pieces of self-imposed heteronormativity gleaned from the cesspool of toxic masculinity that is the vast majority of action cinema that fuck both him and his best friend and crush and future love interest up enormously for years.

my favorite jake english thing is that he’s a complex and nuanced character like so much of homestuck’s cast and I see so much in him that’s relatable and so much that’s frustrating and so much that’s sympathetic and at the end of the day I just want his stupid ass to grow up and learn how to communicate his actual thoughts and desires and embrace his own brilliance and be fucking happy, like he and all his friends and family god damn deserve.

Like people conflate alternate identities for these characters way too much. Dirk and Jake are better people as a -direct result- of their relationships with each other and the girls, and Bro and Pa are conversely worse -directly because- of their isolation.

Homestuck’s themes have always been about flawed people growing and improving through their bonds with each other, not with any one person being Intrinsically Bad or Good. Get some nuance???
