Namely: why does Homestuck choose
to go out on such an ambiguous note? After all, this caused significant
backlash and rifts within the fandom.
(True, an Epilogue is promised,
following certain lingering plot threads, and we got a renewed reminder of that
recently. Still, for the duration of the time from Homestuck’s ending and the
Epilogue’s release—a good two years already—ambiguity is a big part of the
experience of the finale, and it may well stay ambiguous. So what’s the deal?)
For a while I chalked it up to necessity—his
time severely constrained by other problems, Hussie chose to focus on the broad
themes of the story, rather than address every detail. I
still think there’s truth in that, but what I’ve realized is that there’s a
much larger purpose at work, too. Hussie knew exactly what he was doing.
The goal of Homestuck’s ambiguous ending is to bring fans into the same space as its
characters, and recognize in their own lives its most essential themes.
Homestuck is a Gnostic myth that casts its audience as its heroes.
I just realized what Elwurd wants is a jadeblood girl who’ll “go bad” and “be mean to her” and Lynera actually is motivated to lock her up in a dungeon and be really mean to her. and Elwurd would. totally be into it.
Well that’s interesting. Wonder if that’s a ship yet.
I mean that’s definitely a risk and y’know, not saying it’d be healthy or anything, but I am pointing out Elwurd would be into it? And I’m not sure how Lynera would respond to Elwurd being into it, which makes it interesting from a character perspective.
Like, the friendsim makes clear that a lot of whats up with Lynera is loneliness and feeling unlikable and so latching on to Bronya because she’s what’s familiar. So how would Lynera respond to exposing the worst of herself to someone-she’s still self-aware enough to know that what she’s doing is messed up, after all-and being met with not just approval but like, romantic interest?
I can see that throwing Lynera for a loop, is all I’m saying. It’s certainly not an ideal romance or anything, but this is Alternia–there’s no such thing. I can see it leading to character growth for both of them, at least. Kinda hope it gets explored in act 2, tbh!
Oh, just thought way too much about him all the time, nbd!
Really, though, writing character-driven stories is fun. So even if I can’t fit it all in a short friendsim route, I like digging into the established character designs/traits. I thought about how Tagora’s personality is informed by his extended zodiac traits, his upbringing, motivations, fears, alignments, etc.
All that while, like, having this image open in a tab to check when I needed inspiration. It’s about that balance, y’know?
Anyway, thanks, and I’m glad that uhhh showed through some for you??
i will say that i’ve heard somewhere that jane could be talking about ectobiology here. and she could be. but i think her comments on jake’s body give it a sexual meaning, and also, if the roles were reversed and it was a guy saying, “your only value is being hot and i’m going to force you to have children with me,” it would not be ambiguous.
(also the prime time of jake’s life was after the brobot was in it which reveals that he never really found the robot more of an annoyance and inconvenience at times and certainly not as a sexual threat. because jake is scared right now, and i posit that if the robot really had been that kind of threat, jake would not be wishing to return to a time where it was in his life but i digress.)
“no, why does everyone want to kiss me? aranea, stop!”
context: this is after the conversation with crockertier jane. aranea has said before that she knows jake is attracted to her. she is about to “heal” jake and turn his hope powers up to maximum radiance and was going to do it by kissing him. jake Does Not Want to be kissed.
this is brain ghost dirk, during jake and crockertier jane’s conversation.
“look at our god tier pajamas. i look really stupid and it’s weird that my leg hair is gone! but i think your pajamas are decent.”
(and then like twenty minutes later brain ghost dirk, who canonically represents jake’s subconscious desires and understanding, calls himself jake’s boyfriend.)
like you don’t have to care or believe me. i’m sure i skipped some things but these conversations which all happen really close together have always really stuck out to me. but i’m just saying, please listen to what jake is actually saying and thinking. he’s not scared of dirk.
@anon i like to try to keep things sfw on this blog nowadays but thats canon
